The Nyonya One Restaurant, Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Back in May, before I left on my Manhattan sojourn, I read this article in The Star. It was about a Nyonya restaurant in Sri Petaling, and since it wasn't too far away, hubby and I decided to check it out. I am a big fan of Nyonya food, after all.

The restaurant is located just opposite/across the road from the Shell and Esso petrol stations in Sri Petaling.

The very friendly proprietor Madam Leong recommended I try the Nyonya Teh Tarik (RM2.50) which was basically milk tea with pandan juice. The pandan was very fragrant, but the milk and tea could have been thicker, methinks. I do think that this combo was a rather unique idea nonetheless.

We both had the pandan rice (RM3.00) which came sans santan, and with some dried shrimps and sambal on the side.
The BMO Chicken (RM8.50) had really strong contrasting flavours. Chicken coated with basil, mint leaves and sweet oyster sauce in a very hot mini wok....it was definitely memorable.

We also ordered the sambal pucuk paku (RM8.00) which according to the cook, had no belacan. It contained fermented soya beans instead....which was unusual.

The otak-otak kadok (RM12.00) came all wrapped up in banana leaves. It was unlike the one that I'm used to (the Penang version), this one was drier and according to the cook, this dish also contained no santan. I fancied it a tad hard in texture, or maybe it's because my palette is so used to the Penang version which is almost custardy.

The bill amounted to RM37.50 for the 2 of us. I would say the restaurant does try to impress, but I do not quite understand the rationale for not using santan and belacan in their dishes when these 2 ingredients are pretty important in Nyonya dishes. Health concerns perhaps?

Sabai Dee Thai BBQ Seafood Restaurant, Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Some time last month (yes, I am late with blogging), we went to this new Thai restaurant, found at random as we were driving around hunting for dinner.
Seasoned pork (RM10.00) sounded interesting, turns out to be minced pork nuggets seasoned with lemongrass and deep fried. Pretty good.
Spicy Three Crispy Salad (RM12.00) was a concoction of prawns, crispy pork skin keropok, and cashew nuts. It had a tad too much of paprika powder, which made it taste funny.

The seafood tom yam soup (RM10.00) was an improvement, teeming with prawns, squid, fish and shittake mushrooms.

The cendol (RM3.00) had too much ice cubes, I would have preferred the ice-shavings version. Eating this was like eating ice cubes.

It was a pretty ho-hum experience, though the restaurant manager was courteous enough, especially when he saw me taking photos of every dish. He told us that the chef was from Thailand.

Ho Ho Restaurant, Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

We had a steamboat dinner the day I got home. Wanted something light yet nourishing. We've noticed that steamboat is pretty popular in Sri Petaling, there were 2 such restaurants side-by-side, both crowded. We chose Ho Ho, 'cos I liked the name haha.

The stock.

The raw goods.

The noodles and eggs.

We ordered 2 standard sets meant for 2 persons, which totalled RM26.00 (each set costs RM13.00).

World of Dim Sum, Bandar Baru Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

Bro-in-law wanted to eat roast duck at Sunrise Paramount Garden, but hubby wanted to show the folks around Sri Petaling. So we ended up at the World of Dim Sum which is next to a restaurant that sells roast duck and other hawker food. The 2 restaurants apparently have an agreement to share tables and allow customers to order from both restaurants.

Roast duck and roast pork, this combo platter costs only RM14.00. The duck got the thumbs up from all of us, with its thin crispy salty skin.

Mom (in law) was eyeing the dry curry bihun, so she ordered a plate to share.

Char siew pau with lots of filling.

Sweet and sour minced meatball.
Dim sum (don't know the actual name).
Pork ribs.
More dim sum.

Siew mai topped with fish roe.

Dim sum with prawns inside.

Har kow.

The dim sum here was not the best we've had, but it was ok nonetheless. The bill for the dim sum came up to about RM33.00 for the 4 of us, which was pretty reasonable considering we ordered multiple plates of almost everything!

Restoran Dim Sum Fortune, Sri Petaling, Kuala Lumpur

About 2 weeks back we went for a dim sum breakfast in Sri Petaling. There are 2 dim sum shops on the same row, but this one's my favourite, by virtue of its menu. It's usually rather crowded on weekend mornings.

The tables spill onto the sidewalk.

Dim sum.......lots and lots of it!

Being a prawn fanatic, I usually order anything with prawns in it. This one was so obviously prawny (RM3.00).

Har kow (RM3.00), love the crunchiness of the prawns to bits, the har kow skin was just right too!

Oooooh sweet and sour pork ribs (RM4.50), the meat was a bit dry, but the sticky, caramel-ish sauce was excellent!

I love the steamed pork ribs (RM3.00) at this place. It has a very strong garlic flavour, and is not laden with fats. I usually order countless plates of this.

My favourite thing on the menu, and the reason for my trips here...har mai (RM3.00). Instead of pork, this is filled with chunks of prawns and topped with fish roe!

Fried carrot cake (RM2.60).......hubby had it all as I wasn't a fan.

Hubby's meat-free diet left him nursing the steamed tofu (RM3.00).....

.....and more of the same.....fried tofu (RM4.50).
