Cat Abuse @ Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House, Taman Connaught, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

I haven't blogged in almost a year now.......not that I have stopped eating great food, but only that those great meals have not found their way into the digital realm. Well I am blogging today on an incident that occured yesterday morning that made me incensed and permanently put me off a restaurant that I had erstwhile been loyally patronising.

It was 10 on a Sunday morning (24th April 2011). Hubby and I brought hubby's Aussie cousin to Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras to try its exquisite, eggy chilli pan mee, or springy noodles, as we call it. As I entered the restaurant, there was a ginger cat sprawled on the treshold just outside the restaurant, reminiscent of Garfield, except much, much skinnier. It was resting the way cats do - all languid and stretched out on its belly with its little chin on its paws, just watching the world go by, contemplating the lazy Sunday morning in its little kitty imaginings. Such bliss, I thought, as I bent down to say hello to the little sweetheart. Having dispensed with the greetings, I proceeded inside the restaurant to enjoy my breakfast.

I sat facing the entrance of the restaurant, a few tables away from the main door. Barely had I sat down to tuck into the noodles, when I was horrified to see the ginger kitty I had just greeted sent literally flying by an employee of the restaurant, a boy in his teens with a darker skin tone (not sure if he was Chinese or of some other ethnicity). The boy either kicked or physically lifted and flung the cat - end result was, I saw the cat flying above the table level and landing on the road. The boy then just went about his work with nary a concern for the cat - it was as if he had merely casually discarded a piece of used tissue paper, instead of a living, breathing cat that was just minding its own business. I was livid!

I rushed out to the restaurant entrance and there was the poor ginger kitty mewing on the road. It did not appear to have been hurt (at least no wounds that I could detect visually), it must have landed right despite the manhandling by the animal abuser. I patted it and touched it to examine for broken bones, just to reconfirm that it was alright. I then fed it with kitty biscuits that I usually carry around in the car, luring it away from the entrance of Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House to ensure the proprietor would not have any more excuses to abuse and fling the cat at whim.

I was absolutely enraged and wanted to confront the proprietor there and then, but hubby advised that I finished the meal first, to pause and think before taking action. Managed to choke down the meal, but while once loved, the springy noodles have lost their shine in the face of such blatant animal cruelty. I contemplated as I ate.....there were signs pasted everywhere on the restaurant walls  stating "No Pets Allowed". I had previously thought that the proprietor must be very concerned about cleanliness - on hindsight it has become clear that the proprietor was, in reality, an animal hater. Who was going to protect the ginger kitty (or any other kitty for that matter) in future? Who was going to defend these harmless, voiceless, timid sweethearts? They can't report their abuse to the police on their own. They can't physically retaliate against people who fling them on the roads. I could not remain silent about the barbaric act that I had just witnessed.

After completing the meal, I spoke to a middle-aged Chinese guy taking food orders, who appeared to be one of the seniors in the restaurant. I described to him what I saw and pointed out the culprit to him. I wasn't sure if he understood me, I spoke English mixed with my mangled Cantonese. An elderly woman whom I assumed was Madam Chiam and the teenage boy (perpetrator) joined in the conversation. The perpetrator pointed his finger at Madam Chiam and told me to go talk to Madam Chiam  about his actions.  Madam Chiam told me in Cantonese that she had asked the boy to go get rid of the cat. I was indignant and explained that the boy could have just gently shooed the cat away, he did not need to fling and send it flying into the road. She was not apologetic, she tried justifying his actions instead, and gave me the old brush off by turning away to attend to another customer while I was in the midst of talking to her. I decided there was no point in continuing the conversation....I ended it by letting her know that I was going to publish this experience on the internet to bring awareness to all the foodies and animal lovers out there about the atrocious behaviour of Madam Chiam  and her employees.

So if you love food, but love animals more, you would join me to spread the word to all netizens that animal lovers the world over should refrain from dining at Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras because the proprietor believes in and actively encourages animal cruelty. I have seen it with my own eyes.

If you are curious to know how the shop and the elderly lady boss I spoke to (presumably Madam Chiam) look like, visit this blogger's website : http://kwongfeimind.blogspot.com/2010/01/mei-yee-pan-mee-madam-chiam-curry.html

Good food turns rancid in the face of ugly souls.

Shi Fu Wantan Mee Restaurant, Taman Segar, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

We kinda stumbled upon this outlet the last time we went to catch a movie at the Cheras Leisure Mall (the restaurant is just 10 metres away from the mall).
With all the red lanterns and black/dark brown deco, it was hard to miss.
Hubby's iced milk tea (RM2.00) was thick and frothy.

We both ordered wantan mee. I had the special thin, dry noodles (RM8.00) which came with char siew and prawn wantan.
Hubby had the fresh prawn wantan with thin, dry noodles (RM8.00) which was similar to mine, except that his plate had no char siew but had extra prawn wantans. The prawn wantan were really crunchy, springy and fresh. I loved it.
Our only grouse was that the waitress wasn't too attentive and despite reminders, we did not receive the tong sui which we ordered. We finally cancelled that order.

This place sells wantan mee with thick noodles as well.
Pan mee, bbq pork rice, curry mee are all on the menu as well.

3-bams for the tasty, crunchy prawn wantans!

Kedai Nasi Ayam Tim Kee, Taman Connaught, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

This restaurant is located in the row just behind Restoran Sun Ming. It's basically a chicken rice shop, which also sells a wide variety of ready-cooked dishes (economy rice).

Bayam, cos hubby needs his greens.
And pak cham kai (silky steamed chicken) for hubby.
Rice and greens for me.
And a plate of juicy sesame char siew chicken leg....yumm!

The bill came up to RM14.00, which was pretty reasonable.

Roast Duck @ Restoran Sun Ming, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

This place is featured in one of our food guide books and since we venture to Cheras a fair bit, it was only a matter of time before we checked Sun Ming out. Apparently, this restaurant is touted for serving the best roast duck in Cheras.

That's the restaurant, taking up two shoplots.

They sell an assortment of ready-cooked dishes too, beside the roast meats.

We ordered the watercress soup, RM3.50 for a small bowl. It was really tiny, not quite worth the amount paid.

We selected the char siew, siew yoke and roast duck combo (RM20) for 2 persons. Of the 3 types of meat, the char siew was the best. Caramelised-moist and smoky, with charred edges, it rates among the top char siew we've ever eaten, almost comparable to Meng Kee.

Same platter, from another view. The siew yoke was pretty good too; crispy skin with a melt-in-your-mouth quality. The duck, to me, was good but not exceptional. It lacked the crispyness that personifies what, to me, is the best roast duck at Sunrise.

The gravy for the duck.

Our bill came up to RM26.50 for the two of us. I would say Sun Ming serves great roast meats, but the duck here is somewhat overated.

A solid 3-bam for the char siew and siew yoke.

Awet Thai Cafe, Taman Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

The Awet Thai Cafe is just across the road from our usual wantan mee joint in Taman Cheras. At night, it looks kinda cosy with its soft yellow lights and the mist-machine at work. Thai music wafts from its audio system.
We ordered the kerabu angle bean (RM8.00) but was served instead with stir-fried angle beans with garlic and oyster sauce which tasted pretty normal. Wasn't what we had in mind, hello! Kerabu is meant to be spicy, sourish and salad-ish.

The Thai deep-fried pork ribs with garlic (RM12.00) was an improvement. It came served with a home-made Thai chilli sauce and lots of deep-fried garlic bits scattered over the ribs. I found the ribs to be a wee bit chewy, but nicely marinated nonetheless. The crunch of the garlic and the sweet tangy chilli sauce complements it well. Hubby wished there was more meat on the ribs.
The dry pork curry was thick with santan. It could have done with more lemongrass and kaffir lime leaves, but was nonetheless quite piquant. For RM16.00, the serving wasn't that large, just enough for 2 persons.

The seafood tom yam soup (RM6.80/serving of one) was nicely spicy and had all the hallmarks of a good tom yam soup. We had our fill of squid, prawns and abalone mushrooms while slurping away at the refreshing lemongrassy soup.
That's our spread. In total, the bill came up to RM49.15, inclusive of rice and pandan water (refillable). The pandan water was plain water infused with pandan (sort of like pandan tea, non-sweet), I found it unusual and yet very soothing to the palate.

We would rate this place a 3-bam.

Char Siew Wantan Mee @ Restoran Meng Shiang, Taman Cheras

This is the motherlode of all char siew wantan mee shops. I am no big fan of this dish, but the wantan mee sold at this shop has converted me (at least, when I come here to eat).

Succulent, tender slices of char siew on mee soaked in char siew sauce

If you want to savour the wantan mee at this shop, come early in the morning. Insane queues build up for the wantan mee at all hours of the stall's operation. The first time we went to this place, it was around 2.30p.m., all the char siew and other meats were sold out, and yet people were lining up to buy whatever was left (plain mee and wantan!). We too had to settle for wantan mee with the wantan alone. We waited for over half an hour before food arrived.

The second time we went, just last Saturday morning, we were more kiasu, reached at about 9.30a.m., and still had to wait a very long time for our order to arrive. We sat and waited for about 40 minutes before 2 plates of kon low (dry version) wantan mee with char siew and 2 small bowls of wantan arrived.

Our meal....Rm3.50 for small serving, RM4.00 for large

While waiting, we ordered dim sum from another stall in the same kopitiam. Oh boy, big mistake! Being big fans of dim sum, this was probably one of the more terrible ones we've tasted. Too much pepper, overcooked, starchy, in short, the dim sum did not taste "right". So don't be tempted to try, though the wait for the main course (wantan mee!) is long.

Looks enticing, tastes.....not!

The char siew was tender to the bite, as in melt-in-your-mouth tender. We have never tasted char siew of such delicate texture before, our guess is that they must have braised the meat for quite a while before barbecuing it.

My favourite part was the wantan, it had a very tasty meaty-sesame-oil taste, with a hint of lard. Usually, I do not like wantans as they tend to taste very porky, but this was an exception. Excellentious!

Roast pork ribs...sticky and dripping with maltose goodness.....

The roast meats (char siew, pork ribs) are all made made within the kopitiam's premises. The side of the kopitiam is also the centre of production, we spotted huge steel vats in which they barbequed the meats.
Production centre

It was a hearty breakfast and one of our current favourites! Will definitely come here again, with the rest of the wantan mee-loving clan!

Restoran Meng Shiang...home of char siew wantan mee

Restoran Meng Shiang
1 & 3 Jalan Kaskas 2, Taman Cheras
Tel: 03-91333984

If you are coming from the Tesco Extra in Taman Midah Cheras (formerly Makro) which is on your left, you will approach a roundabout. Take the 12 o'clock and after the roundabout, turn right into Taman Cheras, Jalan Kaskas should be on your next right turn. Meng Shiang is a corner kopitiam.

Our rating system for overall satisfaction with what we eat and where we eat....

1-bam = don't even bother
2-bam = good enough to fill the tummy
3-bam = a very good restaurant in its category
4-bam = excellent cooking, worth a detour
5-bam = exceptional cuisine, worth a special journey

We would give the wantan mee a 4-bam rating. Could improve on service time!
