Fat Rock Cafe, Taman Desa, Kuala Lumpur

We are regulars here, and every time we want to come dine here, I'll say, "Let's go see Uma Thurman". You see, there's a waitress here who bears a striking resemblance to the actress, all slender and willowy to boot.

This time we tried the nam yee deep fried chicken. It was superb, crispy outside with the salty taste of nam yee, yet juicy and tender inside. One of our more inspired choices.

Fat Rock, in my opinion, serves the best pai kwat wong in the Klang Valley. They use boneless pork chops for this dish. The meat is succulent, and the best part is the thick sticky gravy that coats the entire piece of meat. The taste of that gravy has not been replicated anywhere else, including our own kitchen. It has a hint of curry powder in the midst of the usual sweet and sour tanginess. Simply excellent!

Hubby is a fan of baby long beans, so we ordered it. Pretty simple, stir fried with garlic.

The bill came up to RM32.80 which is normal when dining here. The good cooking makes it worth it. Some of my other favourite dishes here are the sambal belacan petai prawns and marmite (boneless) chicken. Truly yummy!

As far as regular tai chows go, this place is definitely a 4-bam.

Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles, Taman Danau Desa, Kuala Lumpur

The Woo Pin Fish Head Noodles Restaurant is always crowded on weekend mornings. Having read good reviews of this place, we decided to try it out last Sunday morning.

The fried-fish head noodles soup (RM6.50) had an eclectic taste, it was sour from the tomatoes, slightly bitter from the chinese wine used, and slightly milky from the evaporated milk. Overall, we found it pretty good, though perhaps a wee bit overrated.

The home-brewed foo chuk barley drink was thick and had gingko nuts in it (RM2.00). Good!

Restoran Nyonya (Sayur-Sayuran) Mama Sayang, Jalan Desa, Off Old Klang Road, Kuala Lumpur

Hubby had a vegetarian nyonya treat recently. For the non-vegetarians out there, Mama Sayang is pretty good with the nyonya food, meatlessness notwithstanding. The ambience in this restaurant was cosy, and very peranakan-ish.

They served us acar (RM2.50) as an appetizer. The acar tasted really authentic, rich with crumbled peanuts, and with the vegetables throughly marinated with spices (turmeric and vinegar, I think). Lovely!

Hubby had the honey lemon lime drink (RM3.00), I didn't quite fancy this drink due to its strong taste of preserved lemon.

I fared better with the ais kacang (RM2.50) which was soaked with milk and teeming with peanuts. Really rich, this one. I've read reviews of this restaurant's cendol in the newspaper before, so apparently this place is kinda famous for its desserts. Next trip, we will be trying that out.

Homemade beancurd (RM7.70) is a must-have. This is the best bean curd I've ever tasted, truly eggy. Better than any Japanese tofu.

Stewed "meat" with preserved vegetables (mui choy) (RM9.70) was something new to us. The meat was of course, made of soy product, and didn't taste like any meat I know, lol! Nonetheless, with the gravy and mui choy, it was ok, and it somewhat satisfied hubby's meat cravings.

Organic kangkung belacan (RM11.70) was ironically the most expensive dish that we had. The bits of "meat" it was fried with was again, soy product which tasted pretty good actually. This dish got a thumbs-up from me.

Our total bill came up to RM41.48, including service charge.

Restoran H.L. Huat, Taman Danau Desa, Kuala Lumpur

We are back, after a week's hiatus. This time, with a review of a restaurant that we often visit. Restoran H.L. Huat serves pretty good food, though the portion can sometimes be a tad small. Nonetheless, they do provide a bucket of (unlimited) rice per table so we always go back with full stomachs.

We recently tried the deep fried salted egg-chicken (RM15.00). This dish tasted marvellous, for any of you who have eaten salted egg-coated-crabs, imagine the same, substituting crab with chicken. It's like butter chicken, but with the salty, rich, eggy taste of salted egg yolks coating the crispy chicken batter. Simply delightful!
We also had sweet and sour pork (RM10.00), which was pretty good as well, though slightly overshadowed by the chicken dish.

The vegetable dish was sweet potato leaves fried with sambal belacan (RM8.00). This dish was crunchy and fresh, though I would have preferred it spicier.

Another dish that is a firm favourite in this restaurant is the claypot local tofu (didn't order it this time around), we shall blog about it the next time we go dine there again.
