Cat Abuse @ Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House, Taman Connaught, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

I haven't blogged in almost a year now.......not that I have stopped eating great food, but only that those great meals have not found their way into the digital realm. Well I am blogging today on an incident that occured yesterday morning that made me incensed and permanently put me off a restaurant that I had erstwhile been loyally patronising.

It was 10 on a Sunday morning (24th April 2011). Hubby and I brought hubby's Aussie cousin to Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras to try its exquisite, eggy chilli pan mee, or springy noodles, as we call it. As I entered the restaurant, there was a ginger cat sprawled on the treshold just outside the restaurant, reminiscent of Garfield, except much, much skinnier. It was resting the way cats do - all languid and stretched out on its belly with its little chin on its paws, just watching the world go by, contemplating the lazy Sunday morning in its little kitty imaginings. Such bliss, I thought, as I bent down to say hello to the little sweetheart. Having dispensed with the greetings, I proceeded inside the restaurant to enjoy my breakfast.

I sat facing the entrance of the restaurant, a few tables away from the main door. Barely had I sat down to tuck into the noodles, when I was horrified to see the ginger kitty I had just greeted sent literally flying by an employee of the restaurant, a boy in his teens with a darker skin tone (not sure if he was Chinese or of some other ethnicity). The boy either kicked or physically lifted and flung the cat - end result was, I saw the cat flying above the table level and landing on the road. The boy then just went about his work with nary a concern for the cat - it was as if he had merely casually discarded a piece of used tissue paper, instead of a living, breathing cat that was just minding its own business. I was livid!

I rushed out to the restaurant entrance and there was the poor ginger kitty mewing on the road. It did not appear to have been hurt (at least no wounds that I could detect visually), it must have landed right despite the manhandling by the animal abuser. I patted it and touched it to examine for broken bones, just to reconfirm that it was alright. I then fed it with kitty biscuits that I usually carry around in the car, luring it away from the entrance of Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House to ensure the proprietor would not have any more excuses to abuse and fling the cat at whim.

I was absolutely enraged and wanted to confront the proprietor there and then, but hubby advised that I finished the meal first, to pause and think before taking action. Managed to choke down the meal, but while once loved, the springy noodles have lost their shine in the face of such blatant animal cruelty. I contemplated as I ate.....there were signs pasted everywhere on the restaurant walls  stating "No Pets Allowed". I had previously thought that the proprietor must be very concerned about cleanliness - on hindsight it has become clear that the proprietor was, in reality, an animal hater. Who was going to protect the ginger kitty (or any other kitty for that matter) in future? Who was going to defend these harmless, voiceless, timid sweethearts? They can't report their abuse to the police on their own. They can't physically retaliate against people who fling them on the roads. I could not remain silent about the barbaric act that I had just witnessed.

After completing the meal, I spoke to a middle-aged Chinese guy taking food orders, who appeared to be one of the seniors in the restaurant. I described to him what I saw and pointed out the culprit to him. I wasn't sure if he understood me, I spoke English mixed with my mangled Cantonese. An elderly woman whom I assumed was Madam Chiam and the teenage boy (perpetrator) joined in the conversation. The perpetrator pointed his finger at Madam Chiam and told me to go talk to Madam Chiam  about his actions.  Madam Chiam told me in Cantonese that she had asked the boy to go get rid of the cat. I was indignant and explained that the boy could have just gently shooed the cat away, he did not need to fling and send it flying into the road. She was not apologetic, she tried justifying his actions instead, and gave me the old brush off by turning away to attend to another customer while I was in the midst of talking to her. I decided there was no point in continuing the conversation....I ended it by letting her know that I was going to publish this experience on the internet to bring awareness to all the foodies and animal lovers out there about the atrocious behaviour of Madam Chiam  and her employees.

So if you love food, but love animals more, you would join me to spread the word to all netizens that animal lovers the world over should refrain from dining at Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras because the proprietor believes in and actively encourages animal cruelty. I have seen it with my own eyes.

If you are curious to know how the shop and the elderly lady boss I spoke to (presumably Madam Chiam) look like, visit this blogger's website : http://kwongfeimind.blogspot.com/2010/01/mei-yee-pan-mee-madam-chiam-curry.html

Home Cooking

I find myself cooking alot these days to decompress after a busy day at work. It is strangely soothing to stop thinking about the next report and presentation to prepare for, and just be doing elemental things like chopping vegetables and stir fying meat. Here's a compilation of some of the stuff I've been dishing up lately.

I like simple green vegetable dishes like choy sum.

And ladies' fingers with caramelised onions and garlic....very tasty.

Fried eggs with spicy birds eye chillies in soy sauce.

Kung pao chicken. My first attempt.... and it proved a success!

Tamarind chicken....hubby liked this dish.

Since it's the mango season, we cut and froze a tonne of mangoes....

...and we made mango lassi : frozen mango, yoghurt, honey, brown sugar, blended to a thick paste...delicious, buttery, sweet, fragrant. The perfect dessert!

Restoran Makanan Laut Wang Chiew, SS2, Petaling Jaya

We were searching for a place to take grand-uncle and grand-aunt out to dinner when we stumbled upon this restaurant in the Popular Food Guide @ Malaysia book. It's in a little known area of SS2 Petaling Jaya, but when we went on a Saturday evening, the restaurant was jam packed with customers, right up to the shoplot corridors.

The good thing about this place is that they have menus in English with some pictures and prices which made it alot easier to order. They've got 2 shoplots, one with airconditioning and the other without. Tables were also laid out all over the sidewalk, and at 7.00pm, they were all occupied.

First up, we ordered a choy sum garlic stir fry (RM8.00). Simple and tasty.

We tried the salted pork trotter (RM20.00 for small) which was a chef's specialty here. The pork trotter was very lean with crispy crackling and alot of meat although we ordered a small portion.

The pork trotter came with this special dipping sauce which had a pungent sour-turmeric-peppery taste. Very unique. Grand-aunt wasn't too fond of the sauce, but the rest of us didn't mind it. An acquired taste, perhaps.

The steamed beancurd (RM12.00) with mixed vegetables had a very eggy taste. Very good for bean curd lovers.
This dish was my favourite. The cereal deep fried mantis prawns had a batter that was rich with salted egg yolks (RM12.00). I loved the crunchy, flaky, spicy and salty texture/taste, and ate even the curry leaves interspersed within the crumbly goodness.

The meal came up to RM62.10 (inclusive of rice and drinks) for the 5 of us. They've got an extensive menu, and an exciting crowd of people. This restaurat is very popular and we're surprised not to have discovered it earlier. We'll definitely be back here to sample more of their very reasonably-priced food.

This restaurant is in the SS2 area that is opposite KDU college, across from the LDP highway. If you know where the SS2 Fire Station is, then this is not too far away. If you are on the road (in SS2) parallel to LDP Highway with the SS2 Fire Station on your right, then go all the way straight. Jalan SS2/103 will be one of the roads on your right.

3-bams with alot of potential for more!

Mun Kee Steamed Fish Head, Happy Garden, Kuala Lumpur

Hubby and I discovered this restaurant some time back, pretty much by random...we went to the pasar malam at Happy Garden and since we were in the vicinity, we decided to grab some dinner.
Seeng a large crowd at this (literally) road-side restaurant which coincidentally bears my granduncle's name, we decided to give it a try. We've been back several times since, and it is always crowded on weekend evenings, sometimes to the point of their steamed fish heads being sold out, so it is always a good idea to go earlier.

This time, we tried the salted egg, deep fried chicken wings (RM12.00). See the scrumptious bits of salted egg yolks sticking to the salty batter.....lovely! Since I absolutely love salted eggs, the crunchy and savoury taste of the chicken wings was a winner. Finger licking good!

This style of steamed fish head is popular with customers who frequent this joint (RM20.00). A fleshy slab of freshwater fish head steamed/garnished with soya sauce, ginger shreds, sliced birds eye chillies, scallions, coriander  and garlic oil, this dish's simplicity belies its wonderful, tasty freshness. We try to eat fish regularly....fish is, after all, good for the brains. And when the craving starts, it's off to Mun Kee for us!

Eating At Home

Sunday night's grub was simple and somewhat traditional....but oh so satiating!

We had bean sauce tofu  with fresh brown button mushrooms which hubby cooked beautifully without breaking up the soft, delicate tofu too much. We topped it with a generous sprinkle of scallions.
We had some ladies fingers left in the fridge so a simple stir fry using the savoury Maxchup stir-fry sauce (yellow bottle)  we bought from Thailand was really the simplest thing to do.
I recently bought a whole bag of turmeric roots from Tesco at reduced price (RM1.50 for 656g!) and was trying to figure out how to use them. Maybe I'll plant a few turmeric roots and see if they grow. In the kitchen, however, we decided to try our hand at cooking Nyonya Acar Fish using senangin fish, following one of the Nyonya recipe books that I've religiously collected. This sweet and sour (and mildly spicy since we took the liberty of  adding bird's eye chillies)  dish is a hit....fried fish bathed in a vinegary oil infused with a strong aroma of turmeric, garlic and ginger! Yummy!

Peking Duck Promotion @ Mines Wellness Hotel, Seri Kembangan, Selangor

Hubby sent me this link last Friday and that night itself, we were feasting on crispy, shiny Peking Duck (RM28.00++) at Cheng Ho Court in the Mines Wellness Hotel. That's our duck, all ready to be carved up by the waitress.
The crispy duck skin together with spring onions, was wrapped up in thin crepe. The waitress did all the assembly work, we just had to wait and eat! We had 2 plates full of Peking Duck crepes for appetizer.

I had my crepes with a generous slather of hoisin sauce.

The waitress asked us how we would like the duck meat cooked (at no extra charge!)....with ginger and spring onions, with black bean sauce, or with fried rice or noodles. We chose to have it cooked with longevity noodles. Soon after, a big plate of noodles came our way.

Our bowls were heaped with duck and noodles. The delicious, salty and the well-marinated boneless duck meat pieces were succulent and super tasty, smoky and proved to be excellent complement to the springy longevity noodles.

Our meal for 2, with a pot of Chinese tea (RM4.00), cost us RM36.80 after 15% tax. It was, indeed, worth every cent!

This Peking Duck promotion starts from 1st July 2009 and lasts till 31st August 2009. Each duck costs only RM28.00++ during this period and is available for dinner only. There are apparently no terms and conditions attached to this promotion. Yay!

4 bams for a superb duck meal!

Chow Yhang Restaurant, SS2, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

UCT's birthday was celebrated here a couple months back. It's my first time dining at Chow Yhang Restaurant and it proved to be a treat!
Hubby's uncle (a regular here) ordered the deep fried yam ring. I don't fancy yam, but the stir fried chicken and vegetable filling was pretty good.

We also had the braised pork ribs in honey sauce which was superbly tender, moist and tasted faintly of star anise and cinnamon. Very succulent, very tasty.

We had a whole crispy duck (RM35.00) which was deep fried and then placed upon a soy-based gravy. The meat was a tad dry in certain parts, but the skin was delightfully crispy on the parts that did not touch the gravy. I would have preferred this dish served without the gravy. I love duck in all forms, but crispy is definitely the best way to go!

4 varieties of beans stir fried with sambal belacan. This dish I loved. The sambal belacan used here was more potent than that from other restaurants and the dish had a slightly sour taste (probably from some freshly squeezed lime juice). I absoltely enjoyed this piquant dish.

Steamed patin in soy sauce. The fish was a tad under-steamed here, and there wasn't enough gravy, methinks. This dish could have done with some improvements.

And since hubby's aunt was a big fan of salted egg yolk, we added an order of prawns fried in salted egg style. The crustaceans were coated with wet, thick, salted egg yolk batter. Sinfully delicious!
UCT's birthday cake, an Oreo cheesecake.
The bill for the 8 of us came up to RM223.20.

4-bams because I love the traditional Chinese cooking here!

Restoran Wong Ah Wah, Jalan Alor, Kuala Lumpur

What a feast we had here at Restoran Wong Ah Wah, famous for its BBQ chicken wings.

The roast pork noodles (RM13.00) came with lots of lovely bits of siew yoke. The noodles resembled that of wantan mee, and tasted of lard. Very indulgent dish, this.
The fried rice (RM10.00) was mundane after having experienced the roast pork noodles.

I loved the salted egg squid (RM18.00) which was wet and rich with salted-egg paste. Sublime stuff!
Everyone gave the sweet and sour pork (RM15.00) the thumbs-up as well. The earmark of a good sweet and sour pork is that the deep fried meat mustn't be soggy when drenched with the tangy gravy. This one lived up to that criteria.

Mustn't forget our greens, crunchy stir fried kailan (RM10.00) this time.

And of course the piece de resistance, BBQ chicken wings Wong Ah Wah style (RM12.60). Smoky, sweet, salty, finger-licking goodness.

The total bill for the 5 of us totalled RM89.30, inclusive of drinks. A bit on the pricey side, but very satisfying indeed!

Wantan Mee @ Restoran Ho Weng Kee, SS2, Petaling Jaya

This restaurant is supposed to be a branch of the one in Petaling Street. Hubby wanted to go try it out, and so we did....
I had the char siew wantan mee. I rather enjoyed the springy noodles.

Hubby had the chicken feet char siew wantan mee. The chicken feet looked scary to me. Lol!
The wantan tasted a tad too porky for my liking, though.
The noodles totalled RM12.00.

Cu Cha Dan Fan Restaurant, Section 14, Petaling Jaya

This restaurant in Section 14 PJ lies on top of the Baker's Cottage cake house, next to Guardian, same row as KFC.
I think the proprietor is from China, everything here; from the menu to the posters and signboard, were all in Mandarin. There was no English translation on the menu. We had to guess our way through when ordering, luckily there were pictures on the restaurant's walls depicting their recommended dishes.
We had the tofu in orange-flavoured sauce (RM10.00). This was unusual, in that it is savoury rather than sweet, despite the citrus base. Very tangy.

3-cup chicken, which to me, tasted like chicken in soya sauce (RM12.00). The serving was a tad small, but the chicken was very tender. It could have used more hours in the marinade though, since the taste didn't quite permeate into the chicken flesh.

I would say a 3-bam rating.
