Cat Abuse @ Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House, Taman Connaught, Cheras, Kuala Lumpur

I haven't blogged in almost a year now.......not that I have stopped eating great food, but only that those great meals have not found their way into the digital realm. Well I am blogging today on an incident that occured yesterday morning that made me incensed and permanently put me off a restaurant that I had erstwhile been loyally patronising.

It was 10 on a Sunday morning (24th April 2011). Hubby and I brought hubby's Aussie cousin to Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras to try its exquisite, eggy chilli pan mee, or springy noodles, as we call it. As I entered the restaurant, there was a ginger cat sprawled on the treshold just outside the restaurant, reminiscent of Garfield, except much, much skinnier. It was resting the way cats do - all languid and stretched out on its belly with its little chin on its paws, just watching the world go by, contemplating the lazy Sunday morning in its little kitty imaginings. Such bliss, I thought, as I bent down to say hello to the little sweetheart. Having dispensed with the greetings, I proceeded inside the restaurant to enjoy my breakfast.

I sat facing the entrance of the restaurant, a few tables away from the main door. Barely had I sat down to tuck into the noodles, when I was horrified to see the ginger kitty I had just greeted sent literally flying by an employee of the restaurant, a boy in his teens with a darker skin tone (not sure if he was Chinese or of some other ethnicity). The boy either kicked or physically lifted and flung the cat - end result was, I saw the cat flying above the table level and landing on the road. The boy then just went about his work with nary a concern for the cat - it was as if he had merely casually discarded a piece of used tissue paper, instead of a living, breathing cat that was just minding its own business. I was livid!

I rushed out to the restaurant entrance and there was the poor ginger kitty mewing on the road. It did not appear to have been hurt (at least no wounds that I could detect visually), it must have landed right despite the manhandling by the animal abuser. I patted it and touched it to examine for broken bones, just to reconfirm that it was alright. I then fed it with kitty biscuits that I usually carry around in the car, luring it away from the entrance of Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House to ensure the proprietor would not have any more excuses to abuse and fling the cat at whim.

I was absolutely enraged and wanted to confront the proprietor there and then, but hubby advised that I finished the meal first, to pause and think before taking action. Managed to choke down the meal, but while once loved, the springy noodles have lost their shine in the face of such blatant animal cruelty. I contemplated as I ate.....there were signs pasted everywhere on the restaurant walls  stating "No Pets Allowed". I had previously thought that the proprietor must be very concerned about cleanliness - on hindsight it has become clear that the proprietor was, in reality, an animal hater. Who was going to protect the ginger kitty (or any other kitty for that matter) in future? Who was going to defend these harmless, voiceless, timid sweethearts? They can't report their abuse to the police on their own. They can't physically retaliate against people who fling them on the roads. I could not remain silent about the barbaric act that I had just witnessed.

After completing the meal, I spoke to a middle-aged Chinese guy taking food orders, who appeared to be one of the seniors in the restaurant. I described to him what I saw and pointed out the culprit to him. I wasn't sure if he understood me, I spoke English mixed with my mangled Cantonese. An elderly woman whom I assumed was Madam Chiam and the teenage boy (perpetrator) joined in the conversation. The perpetrator pointed his finger at Madam Chiam and told me to go talk to Madam Chiam  about his actions.  Madam Chiam told me in Cantonese that she had asked the boy to go get rid of the cat. I was indignant and explained that the boy could have just gently shooed the cat away, he did not need to fling and send it flying into the road. She was not apologetic, she tried justifying his actions instead, and gave me the old brush off by turning away to attend to another customer while I was in the midst of talking to her. I decided there was no point in continuing the conversation....I ended it by letting her know that I was going to publish this experience on the internet to bring awareness to all the foodies and animal lovers out there about the atrocious behaviour of Madam Chiam  and her employees.

So if you love food, but love animals more, you would join me to spread the word to all netizens that animal lovers the world over should refrain from dining at Madam Chiam Curry Noodle House at Taman Connaught Cheras because the proprietor believes in and actively encourages animal cruelty. I have seen it with my own eyes.

If you are curious to know how the shop and the elderly lady boss I spoke to (presumably Madam Chiam) look like, visit this blogger's website : http://kwongfeimind.blogspot.com/2010/01/mei-yee-pan-mee-madam-chiam-curry.html

Mom's Resident Kitties

Look who greeted me at the back door of hubby's mom's house! "Meow! I am hungry! Feed me!" That's the mother cat in front, talking to me, while her 2 kids stare warily from behind.

The 2 kids' dad resembles my cat Mankie. We call the dad Prankie. He's a big tuxedo cat who's rather aloof and camera-shy. The 2 kids are timid little babies, but the one on the left (Pram Pram) often bullies the smaller one on the right (Prandit). They and their mom keep hubby's mom busy everytime she goes to the backyard.

Diary of a Dog vs Diary of a Cat

A friend forwarded this to me over the email, and I just had to laugh....

The Diary of a Dog

8:00am: Dog food! My favorite thing!
9:30am: A car ride! My favorite thing!
9:40am: A walk in the park! My favorite thing!
10:30am: Got rubbed and petted! My favorite thing!
12:00pm: Lunch! My favorite thing!
1:00pm: Played in the yard! My favorite thing!
2:00pm: Nap Time! My favorite thing!
3:00pm: Wagged my tail! My favorite thing!
5:00pm: Milk bones! My favorite thing!
7:00pm: Got to play ball! My favorite thing!
8:00pm: Wow! Watched TV with my family! My favorite thing!
11:00pm: Sleeping on the bed! My favorite thing!*

The Diary of a Cat

It is day 683 of my captivity: My captors continue to taunt me with bizarre dangling objects. They dine lavishly on fresh meat, while the other inmates and I are fed hash or some sort of dry nuggets. Although I make my contempt for the rations perfectly clear, I nevertheless must eat something in order to keep up my strength. The only thing that keeps me going is my dream of escape... In an attempt to disgust them, I vomit on the floor.

Today I decapitated a mouse and dropped its headless body at their feet. I had hoped this would strike fear into their hearts, since it clearly demonstrates what I am capable of. However, they merely made condescending comments about what a "good little hunter" I am. The audacity! There was some sort of assembly of their accomplices tonight. I was placed in solitary confinement for the duration of the event. However, I could hear the noises and smell the food. I overheard that my confinement was due to the power of "allergies." I must learn what this means, and how to use it to my advantage.

Today I was almost successful in an attempt to assassinate one of my tormentors by weaving around his feet as he was walking. I must try this again tomorrow -- but at the top of the stairs.

I am convinced that the other prisoners here are flunkies and snitches. The dog receives special privileges. He is regularly released --and seems to be more than willing to return. He is obviously retarded! The bird has got to be an informant. I observe him communicating with the guards regularly. I am certain that he reports my every move. The captors have arranged protective custody for him in an elevated cell, so he is safe....... for now.

Lounging on the window sill

My babies just love to lounge by the window.

Mankie just sleeps the day away.

Often, he completely passes out.
Not to be outdone, Mandy passes out too.

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 1st March 2008)

This weekend's WCB roundup is hosted by Mind of Mog, do hop over to check out the kitty world.
Mongo, the lost and found with a bad case of hernia is recovering superbly. He's talkative and curious. His appetite has also improved by leaps and bounds, though he's still pretty skinny.
The post-operative scar on his belly is healing nicely, hernia all fixed.
Curious Mongo.

Lounging in the kitty room.

He still loves his chin rubs.....
......and furry head pats........

Mongo the lost and found

I have christened the lost orange kitty Mongo.
Mongo underwent abdominal surgery this morning for his massive hernia. His abdominal cavity perforated and his intestines were outside where they were supposed to be......he must have been in a lot of pain to have been crying for so many days and nights now. He's also been neutered, hopefully that would mean less getting into scraps with other cats. When I left, Mongo was still unconscious from the anaesthesia, but otherwise ok. He'll be spending the weekend at Dr. Ben's clinic for observation. I hope his condition remains ok. I hope he recovers fully, after such long suffering.
We played around this morning before going to the vet, hoarse and tired though he was. Purrrr......he loves his ear and chin rubs. Mongo started off very shy, but now that he knows me, he is very tame, affectionate, and hungers for attention.....he must have been neglected a long while. He's also rather skinny compared to Mankie, my tubby baby.
But, weak though he looks, his curiosity knows no bounds. He checked out Mankie and Mandy's room, under my watchful eyes, of course. Needless to say, the 2 resident cats were not too happy and gave many warning growls. Mongo didn't want to fight as he knew he was not the alpha male, and just walked about very cautiously, afraid of looking into Mankie's eyes. Poor Mongo!

Lost orange cat found : Male, with green collar

This orange cat has been hanging around our carpark for days, yeowling and meowing incessantly. I thought it was a stray female cat in heat until I peeked from upstairs and saw that it had a green collar, and when I went for a closer look, I discovered that it was a male cat with a rather emaciated-looking waistline. He also has battle scars, a few small bite marks on him. He has a round, tennis ball-sized growth on his abdomen; not sure if it's a bloated tummy due to lack of food, or a tumour. He looks like he hasn't been eating for weeks! He must have been crying forlornly for his owner, and/or for food.
I introduced him to Mankie and Mandy, and saw a side of Mankie that I never knew existed. Mankie and the orange cat started screaming at each other, and I had to quickly shut the door separating them before they got into a brawl. Mankie now looks at me suspiciously.......I think he feels abit betrayed that I brought another male cat home.

Anyway, new orange kitty is now being bathed. I intend to help him locate his owner, and most importantly, get him to eat........poor kittykins!

*Updates: Just got back from our regular vet, Dr. Ben. Diagnosis: poor Orange has hernia! His intestines are strangulated and outside where they are supposed to be, hence the big growth on his abdomen. Dr. Ben says Orange will probably die of starvation soon if nothing is done, as he is unable to consume any food/water. Apparently his hernia has been going on for a long time now to grow to this size, and methinks his owners abandoned him because of it! I have decided to send Orange for surgery tomorrow, Dr. Ben is charging minimal since we are both intent on saving poor Orange's life. Surgery is always a risk of course, please pray that Orange is strong enough to survive it!

Merry Christmas!

For Christmas this year, we cleaned up and converted the old rabbit hutch (the bunnies went over the rainbow bridge sometime back) into a double-decker bed, and presented new red Ikea kitty cushions to the 2 kids (Merry Christmas, babies!).

Mandy gets the bottom bunk, 'cos Mankie's claustrophobic and Mandy likes to huddle and "hide" anyway.

Mankie gets his favourite top bunk, and looks very cosy in his new bed.
He was soon fast asleep.....

We are currently back in our hometown for Christmas, and Streamyx only just got installed, up and running here yesterday! We've stashed all the gifts under (and around) the Christmas tree, Bam and Binky are keeping watch over the loot. I'm gleefully anticipating opening the prezzies later tonight. Today is Christmas eve and we are all lounging at home, eating and watching tv, mostly....there appears to be a Gordon Ramsay (The F Word) marathon on AFC. Tonight's the Christmas eve vigil mass at our old Church, the whole family's looking forward to that. Wonder what mom's cooking for dinner!

To everyone reading this, have a MERRY CHRISTMAS and a VERY HAPPY NEW YEAR!

Cute marmalade

Kitty caught lounging in a restaurant, on a chair, under a table. Poor kitty had a chewed-off spot on its tail.

Kitty realised paparazzi was around.

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 8th December 2007)

Spotted : Kitty grooming self in Pasar Borong Selangor (Selangor Wholesale Market).

Hey, keep that camera outta my face, will ya!

Paparazzi! A cat can't even have some privacy!

Tired from all the attention, kitty went to sleep.

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 24th November 2007)

Mankie was a naughty boy recently. He jumped onto the window ledge and landed his front paws on the turtle aquarium, with his back legs still dangling. His weight dragged the aquarium down the window ledge (toward himself) and spilled the contents onto him and onto the floor. Luckily the poor turtles were ok, if slightly shaken. Mommy had to mop the floor, clean Mankie up and find the turtles a new home.

Mankie was a heap of guilt after the incident. Too embarrased to even look at mommy.

I didn't do it, nobody saw me doing it, you can't prove anything!

Naughty boys stand in the corner.

This week's WCB is hosted by House of The (Mostly) Black Cats, do pop by to check out the kitty realm!

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 10th November 2007)

This weekend's WCB is hosted by Sher and Upsie kitty at What Did You Eat? Do drop by and check out the kitty blogroll for the week.

During last weekend's homecoming, I had a fun moment playing with the alleycats that paid a visit to future mom-in-law's back garden.

Three sibblings in a row....wary yet curious.

The fourth sibbling was more daring and friendly, kitty came over for a pat and ear rubs.

Kitty likes the fussing.
Kitty even fell sideways in anticipation of a tummy rub. Cutiepie!

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 3rd November 2007)

This weekend's WCB is hosted by Chey's Place, do hop by to visit and read all about what kitties everywhere have been up to for the past week.

The only time Mankie and Mandy will deign to share the basket is during thunderstorms, when it's huddle time. Mandy likes to smile for the camera, whilst Mankie just likes to stare. They remind me of chickens roosting in a nest.

The kittykins looking coy. Notice Mandy smiling.

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 27th October 2007)

Homeless kitties abound.........

Baby kitties seeking refuge in a box near a supermarket, huddled together.

Sleeping kitties, with one very curious baby wide awake.

Curious baby wonders where the camera flash is coming from.
New kitties on the block....curious glowing eyes. The new kitties (all sibblings) are a couple of months old, and have been wandering around the compound. Mom and dad, nowhere to be seen.

Wary of humans, a shy orange kitty hides amongst the bushes.

Grey striped kitty on the watch-out.

Closeup of grey kitty.

Left a pile of kibbles and water for the vagabond kitties, poor little fellas were famished.
