Char Siew Pau @ Pasar Siang Malam, Taiping

Hubby insisted that I blogged about this pau which he says is the best char siew pau in the world and can only be found in Taiping.
He buys a bunch everytime we are in town. At RM0.80 each, they are a steal.
Hubby likes the pau because the they are generous with the meat; a mixture of lean and fatty flesh. Also the pau's dough is not too thick.

Pasar Siang Malam is located on Jalan Kota, next to the KFC outlet in Taiping town. This Pasar is also where old timers in Taiping gather daily to bet on when the rain will fall. As its name suggests, it's open 24 hours. The pau is usually available in the evenings.

Hubby says the char siew pau deserves a 4.5-bam rating!

Dim Sum @ Corner Club Restaurant, Gurney Drive, Penang

Located next to Evergreen Laurel Hotel on Gurney Drive, it's hard to miss Corner Club, a bungalow with a large parking space in front. Since we were doing the whole food-trip repertoire, we took dad along to this restaurant for breakfast.
The prices for the dim sum dishes at Corner Club varies from RM2.20, RM2.50, RM3.00, RM3.50, RM4.50, RM5.50 to RM6.00. Pretty affordable for an air-conditioned "yum cha" restaurant, methinks.

Dad's favourite pau is the nam yee pau, with a fat slab of pork belly inside. So we ordered a basket of it. Having tasted it, dad maintained that Balik Pulau still has the best nam yee pau on the island.

Lor mai kai, they were generous with the meat and Chinese sausage.

This was one of my favourites. Deep fried large, springy prawns wrapped in crispy beancurd skin. Superb!
Fired radish cake with lots of eggs and pickled vegetables. Good!

Yam basket prawn salad. Dad and hubby feasted on this, since I fancy neither yam nor mayonnaise.
Hubby had the Hong Kong chee cheong fun with big prawns wrapped within, topped with a dollop of dried shrimp sambal and deep fried shallots.
Steamed pork ribs, very tasty and not overcooked.

Har kow (prawns dumplings), very good, this. The skin did not fall apart upon contact and the prawns were yummy.
Prawn siew mai, excellent! As you can see, I have a prawn fetish.
The total bill for the 3 of us came up to RM43.05.....very reasonable for good quality dim sum at a comfortable venue, cheaper than what this would have cost in KL.

Tai Tong Restaurant, Lebuh Cintra, Penang

This corner pre-war shophouse is an institution in Penang. Tai Tong has been in operation for umpteenth years, I remember dining here as a kid.

These days, it's a dim sum heaven, crowded to the brim when we last visited. Grouchy old lady- waitresses rule the roost here, so you'd better be on your best behaviour!

We had a big pau with sweet lotus paste and a salted egg yolk. It was BIG.

Char siew pau, also BIG.

Lor mai kai, this tasted ok.
Fried radish cake, pretty good, though it could use a little more burnt edges.

Neat little parcels of pandan chicken, I liked this alot for the juicy, fragrant bone-free meat.

Fried prawns coated in batter. The batter was a tad too thick and hard.

Minced meat and prawns in lohbak skin....yummy!

Hong Kong chee cheong fun, not the Penang type.
Steamed pork ribs. I had the lion's share since this was my favourite dim sum dish.

Siew mai, too porky tasting.

Har mai, better.

Har kow, even better! Prawns! Prawns! Prawns!

Wu kok. I don't fancy yam much, so I gave this a pass. It looked pretty enough, though.

Prawns, deep fried in lohbak skin. Good, albeit could have been crunchier!
The price for each item ranges from RM0.80 - RM6.50.

Hubby's bro belanja-ed I think the bill came to around RM60.00+ for the four of us.

Hong Kee Tim Sum Restaurant, Damansara Utama, Petaling Jaya

Having read reviews of this place by WMW and Precious Pea, amongst others, we decided to give it a try. Since it was a weekday, we could not order the famous Sang Chow Loh Mai Fan (Glutinous Rice) which was available only on weekends.

We made do with the fried radish cake, which was pretty good.

The skin of the har kow was a bit thick, and fell off when I took it out of the serving bowl.

The Hong Kong chee cheong fun was ok.

We also had the radish slabs.

And prawns wrapped in lobak skin and deep fried.

The pai kwat here tasted normal.

The siew mai had a tad too much fatty bits for my liking.

My favourite has got to be the pau with salted egg yolk custard.

The meal for 3 persons came up to RM31.10.

Dragon-i Restaurant, Pavilion Mall, Kuala Lumpur

We were wandering around the Pavilion Mall the other day and bro-in-law took us to Dragon-i for a quick meal. We were full, but as usual, there's always room for more. :o)
We ordered the steamed rice with minced pork and fried foo yung egg (RM15.00). The rice had a lovely rose wine taste which was really fragrant and unique.

We also shared the Shanghainese steamed meat dumpling (RM9.00). This was good, with the soup still intact within the dumpling, takes a certain skill to create.

The fried carrot cake with shrimp (RM12.00) was the best we've had in KL so far. Each bit had crispy sides which gave this dish a certain deep-fried, slightly-burnt nuance which was perfect on the palate.
I ordered the barley beancurd skin soup with gingko and quail egg (RM6.00). I love this dessert from childhood days, pity there was only one quail egg in the bowl. The soup tasted like soya bean milk with bits of barley and gingko. I polished it up real quick.

A Little Dim Sum Place, SS2, Petaling Jaya

Hubby's mom loves dim sum. The daintier, the better. So there I was, surfing the net, searching for a new dim sum place to take her to, when I stumbled upon a slew of postings on "A Little Dim Sum Place" by Precious Pea and WMW, amongst others.
We ordered char siew pau (it's called honey bbq pork bun on the menu), a staple (RM3.00).
The char siew filling within the pau.
This was my favourite; Sunshine bun (RM3.50).

Inside the Sunshine bun is molten salted-egg yolk custard. The pau tasted like kaya and butter mixed with mashed up salted egg yolk.....simply melt-in-your-mouth heavenly! This had both of us raving.
The avocado katafil (RM4.80) tasted strange, I guess you could say my palate wasn't quite so used to the avocado taste.
The bacon roll (RM5.80) was another winner. Hubby would have loved this.
King of Siew Mai (RM5.50) topped with very fresh, succulant prawns.....I couldn't resist ordering this, being a big prawn enthusiast.
Shrimp cage (RM5.50), another prawn-filled dish, this time deep-fried. Mom liked this one.
The fried radish cake with eggs and beansprouts (RM5.50) was one of the better ones we've tasted. They were very generous with the beansprouts.
We wanted to try the desserts they serve here, but by then, we were too stuffed to eat anymore.
The bill came up to RM38.65 for the 2 of us, ordering ala carte. They have all-you-can-eat dim sum buffet on weekends, I believe it costs RM26++ (or thereabouts) per person.
