Maxim's Cakes, Jalan Burmah, Pulau Tikus, Penang

So after the detour to Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng, we walked a little distance and made yet another pit stop, this time for some dessert.

This rather striking shop called Maxim's Cakes was where we ventured into.

We weren't there for the cakes, however, we were there for the gelato. Maxim's serves one of the biggest selections of exotic alcoholic gelato in town.

We tried the Kahlua and Whiskey Cream gelato. Absolutely fantastic, creamy and boozy! And at RM3.50/pop, it was cheaper than what we usually find in KL.

Right after the char koey teow lunch at Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa, we went across the road when hubby insisted on checking out the famous Bangkok Lane Mee Goreng.

Kedai Kopi Sin Hwa has got to be my favourite duck egg char koey teow place in Penang (so far).

They've even got 2 persons frying concurrently to meet the high demand.

It was Chinese New Year and of course, the prices went up. All four of us ordered char koey teow with duck egg (RM4.50/plate).

Ok it looks plain but it was super "wok hei", burnt around the edges and tasting really fried and yet not overly dry. The duck egg just tied everything together, perfect to the last bite!
There is also a stall in Sin Hwa that sells laksa asam and laksa lemak (normal RM3.00, large RM4.00).

We ordered a bowl of laksa lemak (RM3.00). It was good, not spectacular, but definitely good. Could have been a tad creamier, but it does have the essential Siamese laksa taste.

Ah Leng Char Koey Teow @ Kimberley Street, Georgetown, Penang

We had a late lunch on our first day in Penang last Chinese New Year.

It had to be char koey teow, of course. We drove around and found Ah Leng Char Koey Teow stall still opened for business in a food court in Kimberly Street.

We had a plate each, and since it was the festive season, Ah Leng (apologetically) charged a cool RM5.00/plate. It came without any chives, but it was super tasty nonetheless.



I'd give this char koey teow a high 3-bams++.

Mee Combat @ Larut Matang Hawker Centre, Jalan Panggung Wayang, Taiping, Perak

I don't know anywhere else that sells Mee Combat. Well, it is essentially mee goreng mamak, but what an imaginative name!

This corner stall in the Larut Matang Hawker Centre sells an assortment of noodles.

The Mee Combat Goreng (RM3.00) is spicy and has to be eaten hot. It clumps when cold.

For me, it was an ok dish, but hubby's bros seem to love it.

Char Koey Teow @ Peace Hotel, Taiping, Perak

So I've been bugging hubby about eating at Peace Hotel (Restaurant), they serve really great roast duck & fried pork here. We did go, but it was late in the afternoon, and the duck rice stall had closed by then. And so, we settled for char koey teow.

We ordered a fried koey teow-bihun combo (I think it cost RM2-something). Cheap! It was done in the Taiping style which was wetter than the Penang style. Still good, though nothing really compares to Penang Char Koey Teow.
