Hokkien Mee @ Restoran Ahwa, behind Jalan 222 Shell petrol station

Uncle M and family loves the hokkien mee here. We were in the vicinity the other day, and since it was dinner time, we dropped by for a quick meal. Photo quality's a bit dodgy as photos were taken using a handphone.

Hokkien mee.

Hokkien mihun.

The hokkien mee and hokkien mihun were both teeming with pork lard fritters, which made them very fragrant. I had my share with splashings of chilli sauce, and picked out all the pork lard fritters :D. Hubby-to-be, on the other hand, finished every last morsel of his.

Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh, PJ Old Town, Selangor

This was an old favourite haunt of ours, when is search of bak kut teh (herbal pork ribs soup). Well, after this latest sojourn there, I am afraid, it would be our last (more on that to follow).

Heng Kee Bak Kut Teh is famous in PJ Old Town, it is always crowded, and admittedly, the taste of the soup is really good. The price is pretty reasonable too, and the portions hearthy.

A bowl of steaming bak kut teh for 2, lean meat only (cause that's the only type I'll eat!), RM14.00.

A bowl of yau char kwai (deep fried Chinese cruellers) to dip in the soup, RM1.00.
Lots of rice, garlic and chillies to complement the soupy bak kut teh.

We ordered a dish of green vegetables. The first time it came, it was sprinkled with lots of fried garlic and oil. And in the midst of all the garlic, we spotted a dead fly. Naturally, we sent it back. A replacement came, and as you can see in the above picture, no more fried garlic. I suppose they must have thrown away the garlic oil mix that they usually use for making this dish. We ever so cautiously ate the new plate of vegetables. Toward the end of our meal, we saw this...........

Arggggghhhhh!! Our replacement plate of vegetables also had a dead fly in it!!! Gag! Hubby-to-be was pissed off with the consecutive incidents and reported it to several waiters, none of whom did anything other than to smile and dismiss it ever so casually. When paying for the meal, we highlighted it to the head waiter (who looked like he could be one of the managers) who waived the price of the vegetable dish from our bill. He did, however, pretend not to recognise what the tiny dot on the plate was (refer to photo above) when we first showed it to him, and told him how we had a dead fly in our dish twice in a row. And this is why that was the last time we are ever going to eat at this shop.

We would give this restaurant a 1-bam rating. Despite serving good bak kut teh, we wouldn't recommend this place to anyone due to the serious lapse in basic food safety and hygiene. Please avoid, unless flies are your idea of a good meal.

Pasar Borong Selangor @ Sri Kembangan

It was Friday night, and instead of clubbing in some cool joint, we were happily driving to a new discovery......Pasar Borong Selangor which opens at night. Yeah, mucking around in a wholesale wet market on a Friday night was our idea of fun!

It has a spacious set-up, with 3 sections in the main hall; vegetables, seafood and chicken/meat. Besides this main hall, there are also other stalls on the perimeter grounds of this market which sells dried goods and fruits. No non-halal section, though.

Operating hours:

Mon-Fri: 6.00pm-Midnight, 4.00am-11.00am.

Sat-Sun, Public Holidays: 6.00pm-1.00am, 4.00am-Noon
The vegetable section. Being a Tesco faithful, I compared prices between vegetables in Tesco and in this market and found Tesco to be generally cheaper.
Every stall was selling chicken at RM6.00/kg the night we were there. Tesco is still cheaper for poultry.
The seafood section was teeming with fish, all the common ones and some not-so-common ones too!

Gorgeous parrot fish.

Ugly lion fish. In Chinese, it's known as the "chicken feather fish". The ugly fish has no scales. We bought a bunch, at RM5.00/kg. The meat was really tender, in fact, too tender for my liking. I prefer more texture on my fish. Taste-wise, it's somewhat like catfish. The seafood is reasonably priced, we bought tiger prawns at RM18.00/kg, huge (and I mean Huge) squids at RM8.00/kg, and belanak at RM4.50/kg. I would say, with regard to seafood, this place beats Tesco's prices.

Pasar Borong Selangor is deep inside Sri Kembangan, diagonally across the road from Taman Equine's Jaya Jusco Supermarket. Parking costs RM1.00/entry.

Restoran 6 to 10 Grill & Nasi Lemak, Section 17, Petaling Jaya, Selangor

This place was pretty crowded on a weekend evening, it appeared to be rather popular among the younger crowd. It boasts of "economical western food and homemade nasi lemak". Having eaten there a couple of times, we circled the area and decided to go where the crowd was most. I have a weakness for checquered table cloth......how quaint :o)

Hubby-to-be ordered nasi lemak (RM6.50) for which this place is famous. The beef rendang was very piquant - thick, rich and tender. The sambal was sweetish and came in a generous helping.

The only complaint he had was that there were too few ikan bilis in the fried nuts and ikan bilis mix.

I opted for western and ordered grilled chicken chop (RM10.50). A big slab of succulent boneless chicken leg grilled to perfection arrived. The edges were just slightly burnt for that smoky taste. The gravy was reminiscent of teriyaki sauce with a hint of worchestershire sauce. Really good!

We shared a large, thirst-quenching iced lemon tea (RM4.50).

Restoran H.L. Huat, Taman Danau Desa, Kuala Lumpur

We are back, after a week's hiatus. This time, with a review of a restaurant that we often visit. Restoran H.L. Huat serves pretty good food, though the portion can sometimes be a tad small. Nonetheless, they do provide a bucket of (unlimited) rice per table so we always go back with full stomachs.

We recently tried the deep fried salted egg-chicken (RM15.00). This dish tasted marvellous, for any of you who have eaten salted egg-coated-crabs, imagine the same, substituting crab with chicken. It's like butter chicken, but with the salty, rich, eggy taste of salted egg yolks coating the crispy chicken batter. Simply delightful!
We also had sweet and sour pork (RM10.00), which was pretty good as well, though slightly overshadowed by the chicken dish.

The vegetable dish was sweet potato leaves fried with sambal belacan (RM8.00). This dish was crunchy and fresh, though I would have preferred it spicier.

Another dish that is a firm favourite in this restaurant is the claypot local tofu (didn't order it this time around), we shall blog about it the next time we go dine there again.

Weekend Cat Blogging (Week of 24th November 2007)

Mankie was a naughty boy recently. He jumped onto the window ledge and landed his front paws on the turtle aquarium, with his back legs still dangling. His weight dragged the aquarium down the window ledge (toward himself) and spilled the contents onto him and onto the floor. Luckily the poor turtles were ok, if slightly shaken. Mommy had to mop the floor, clean Mankie up and find the turtles a new home.

Mankie was a heap of guilt after the incident. Too embarrased to even look at mommy.

I didn't do it, nobody saw me doing it, you can't prove anything!

Naughty boys stand in the corner.

This week's WCB is hosted by House of The (Mostly) Black Cats, do pop by to check out the kitty realm!

Cooking at home

These past weeks have seen us cooking at home quite a bit.
We experimented with Bak Kut Teh (herbal pork soup). This packet of instant Bak Kut Teh ingredients contained 2 sachets of powdered herbs and spices, and 1 packet of soya sauce, enough for about 1kg of meat.

All we had to do was add meat, whole garlic bulbs, vegetables and water for a hearty Bak Kut Teh meal.

Sweet and sour (and slightly spicy) pork chops.

Long beans and coriander omellete.

Garlic shoots with prawns in spicy, peppery, oyster sauce.

And last night, we had baked chicken marinated with blended "stuff" (lemongrass, ginger, onions, chillies, garlic, turmeric, lime, sugar, sesame oil, Shiaoxing wine, fish sauce, santan), with sides of mashed potatoes and stirfried garlic french beans.

Thye Hong @ Pavilion Mall's Food Republic, Kuala Lumpur

It was just mom-in-law, hubby (to-be) and me wandering around the newly opened The Pavilion mall in KL, when we went to the lower ground floor and stumbled upon a food heaven. They call it the Food Republic (fancy name for a food court that looked equally fancy). Boy oh boy, we were spoilt for choice.
We walked almost the entire floor and finally saw an outlet that really piqued our interest. There were long queues in front of Thye Hong (always a good sign!).

Upon closer examination, we saw this man in a glass "cubicle" adjacent to the main counter, busy frying eggs and huge, luscious-looking oysters! How could we resist?!

After queueing for a bit, we got our plate of o'chien (fried oysters with eggs). This one's a little different from the Penang version, as the eggs and oysters were fried separately; the oysters were only topped onto the eggs (rather than being mixed IN the eggs). But they sure served jumbo-sized oysters at RM7.00/plate.

The fried kuey teow (RM6.50) was nothing to shout about, though. Plain and without prawns, we've tasted better!

A better deal would be the fried kueh kak (carrot cake) at RM6.50. The carrot cake was fried with slightly-burnt edges, and the tastyness of the soya sauce and other ingredients penetrated into the carrot cake itself. It came served with a big helping of eggs.
Do also check out Masak-Masak's post on the Food Republic at The Pavilion.
